2007 News

Institute Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held at the Devon Valley Hotel in Stellenbosch on 5 May 2007.

It was attended by 23 members and 18 members nominated proxy representatives. The members enjoyed Bruno Paillard NV for the duration of the meeting.

Glasses were raised to welcome the 7 new members, and to celebrate the three marriages (Gerald Ludwinski, Jenny Ratcliffe and Berenice Barker) and one birth (Karin Green) in the year leading up to the meeting.

Reports were made by the National Chairman (Margaret Fry), National Treasurer (Margie Fallon), Northern Branch Chairman (presented by Margie Fallon on behalf of Junel Vermeulen) and Marketing Committee (Jenny Radcliffe). The Cape Wine Academy and Education Committee (Marilyn Cooper) also reported on activities over the past year and the status of the Cape Wine Master programme.

Office bearers were elected for the 2007/2008 year. These were Margaret Fry (National Chairman), Bennie Howard (National Vice-Chairman), Margie Fallon (National Treasurer) and Elsie Pells (National Secretary). The Northern branch re-elected Junel Vermeulen to the post of Northern Branch Chairman and she took up the position of Northern Branch representative to the NEC.

The Education and Admissions committee was elected and comprises Cornel Spies, Jeff Grier, Marilyn Cooper, Clive Torr, Caroline Snyman, Christine Rudman and Bennie Howard.

Jenny Ratcliffe, Bennie Howard, Karen Green and Brad Gold were elected to form the Marketing Committee.

The Western Cape decided to form a branch structure, to coordinate events. The management team is comprises Andy Roediger, Dick Davidson, Greg de Bruyn, Jenny Ratcliffe Wright and Tom Blok.

The meeting agreed to the presentation of a bursary to Cape Wine Master candidate Mpho Omotola, in Johannesburg.

The Institute tour in Spain will be taking place between 6 and 16 June 2007, coordinated by Bennie Howard.

In addition to the Van Rijn Excellence in Brandy award to the top graduating student, (awarded to Andy Roediger), the inaugural Groenland Award for Viticultural Excellence was made to Gerda Mouton.

Membership fees remain at last year's level.

The date of the next annual general meering will be 6 May 2008.

The lunch for the inauguration of new CWMs will be held on Friday 6 May 2008.
