Seven new graduates were awarded certificates as Cape Wine Masters on May 4, the biggest group ever in the history of this select association – five men and two women.
This brings the membership to 62, including nine overseas members. There are three honorary members, Dave Hughes, Phyllis Hands and Colin Frith.
The new graduates are high profile professionals in diverse fields.
Tom Blok is a qualified chartered accountant, Chris de Klerk is a wine ambassador for Distell, Andrew Mitchell is a garagiste producer of note, as is Dr Andy Roediger, who heads up an analytical laboratory, while András
Salamon is a technology entrepreneur, presently studying at Oxford. Meryl Weaver runs a wine edutainment
business in addition to being an official wine taster for the Platter wine guide and lecturer at the CWA and Gerda Mouton is a wine exporter.
Their task reports have added new perspectives to wine research in South Africa and are available to industry for perusal at the Cape Wine Academy and the SAWIS library.
Topics range from:
- the financial ( The breakeven point of wine – Blok );
- the scientific ( Techniques to achieve moderate alcohol levels in SA wine - Salamon ) and
- technical ( Phenolic ripeness in SA – Roediger ),
- wood alternatives: a substitute for barrels, or merely an economical flavourant – Mitchell )
- to viticultural ( The terroir: the footprint of great wine – Mouton );
- the emergence of cooler wine regions in SA – Weaver ) and
- vinicultural ( Merlot in SA and internationally – De Klerk ).
In 2003 the Cape Wine and Spirit Education Trust granted the Cape Wine Academy the right to award the Cape Wine Master (CWM) qualification and confer the Cape Wine Master’s title, in collaboration with the Institute of Cape Wine Masters.
In total 34 men and28 women have qualified as Cape Wine Masters since the qualification was first instituted in 1984.
