FAQ

3) About learning more about wine

The prerequisites for becoming a Cape Wine Master are a passion for exploring wine, and the completion of some essential wine courses.

The Institute of Cape Wine Masters (ICWM) does not run courses but assists the Cape Wine Academy (CWA) by presenting components of the Academy courses.

1) Length of time to complete studies for Cape Wine Masters:

Once you have successfully completed the four-module Diploma course at the Cape Wine Academy, with an average pass mark of 65% , you can apply to study toward the qualification of Wine Master.

The Cape Wine Master qualification is a self-study course, and there are no formal lectures or tastings. Most candidates form or join study support groups in their studies. Candidates are provided with a CWM mentor, who will provide guidance and support.

Candidates have a total of five years from the date of registration to complete the various components of the qualification.  These include four tasting exams of international and South African wines (natural wines, sparkling wines, desert and fortified wines, and brandy), four theory exams (viticulture, viniculture, distilled and other products, and general knowledge).  They then prepare a thesis on a topic which has been approved by the examining committee, and are required to make a formal tasting presentation to an examining panel.

The maximum period allowed for completion of the qualification is 5 years. However, a (small) number of our members have completed the course in under 2 years. So if you complete the 4-module diploma in June (with the appropriate marks), you could register to write CWM exams in October off the same year.

In the first year of registration, it is compulsory to sit all four tasting exams AND one theory exam. I have attached a copy of the details of the CWM registration, provided by the Cape Wine Academy, which manages the CWM examination process.

2) Enquiry about the qualification of Cape Wine Master

Passion for wine is an imperative for the journey toward becoming a Cape Wine Master. The only other prerequisite is a Diploma from the Cape Wine Academy.

The Cape Wine Academy runs the examination system for Cape Wine Masters, and has branches in the main centres of the country (Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Durban and Johannesburg). More detailed information can be obtained from www.capewineacademy.co.za or from their offices in Stellenbosch 021 889 8844 or Johannesburg 011 7834585.

There is no requirement that candidates should be involved directly in the wine industry or wine education, although it is likely that most people who are this committed to the enjoyment and knowledge of wine will be involved in lecturing at the CWA, or conducting tasting in their community.
